Amanda Holden Updates on Jamie Theakston’s Cancer Diagnosis and Reveals His Expected Return to Radio
Amanda Holden has provided an update on her co-host ‘Jamie Theakston’s recovery from stage 1 laryngeal cancer, revealing that he is expected to return to radio later this year after undergoing voice therapy.
Theakston, 53, who presents ‘Heart Radio,’ announced his diagnosis last month after listeners noticed a change in his voice, prompting him to seek medical advice. The radio host revealed that he had been diagnosed with ‘stage 1 laryngeal cancer’ and subsequently underwent surgery to remove a lesion from his vocal cords.
During a ‘Good Morning Britain’ appearance on Monday, Holden, 53, shared that Theakston is expected to recover fully. “The good news is with Jamie, it was stage 1, and he’s going to be fine,” Holden said.
She added that his current challenge is regaining his voice, explaining that he will undergo voice therapy. “We are keeping everything crossed that he’ll be with us at least in November or for Christmas.”
Theakston had initially hoped to return to work in October, but his recovery has taken longer than anticipated. Holden expressed how much she and her colleagues miss him, saying, “He always used to sit in the studio doing none of this, so now he’s sat at home doing none of this. We miss him so much.”
Jamie confirmed his diagnosis to fans last month, sharing the news on social media. “I recently had an operation to remove a lesion from my vocal cords,” he said. “The biopsy has identified this as stage 1 laryngeal cancer. The prognosis is very positive, and I hope to be back with you in October.”
He reassured listeners by stating, “I have cancer, but cancer doesn’t have me!” and expressed his gratitude to ‘JK’ and ‘Amanda Holden,’ who has been covering his show during his recovery.
Theakston also thanked the ‘Global Radio’ team for their support and concluded his message by encouraging fans to appreciate each day. “Be thankful for this day; I’ll have a great story to tell when I see you next.”
Shortly after Theakston’s announcement, Amanda Holden addressed his condition live on ‘Heart Radio,’ becoming emotional as she shared the news. “You might have seen on Jamie’s socials that he recently had an operation to remove a lesion from his vocal cords, and we wanted to let you know that the biopsy has been identified as stage 1 laryngeal cancer,” she told listeners. Despite the diagnosis, Holden emphasized that it wasn’t “all bad news” and remained hopeful for his return.
Holden also took to social media, resharing Theakston’s post and adding, “We love you, Jamie.”
Theakston’s battle with laryngeal cancer, which affects the voice box, has led him to take time off from his breakfast show to focus on his health. According to the ‘NHS,’ treatment options for laryngeal cancer typically include ‘radiotherapy,’ ‘surgery,’ ‘chemotherapy,’ and targeted cancer medicines.
Holden’s comments came as she prepares to embark on a 250-mile charity cycle from Bude, Cornwall, to London, raising funds for Global’s Make Some Noise. During her interview on Good Morning Britain, host Susanna Reid asked if Jamie would be returning to work soon. Holden responded with optimism about his recovery and upcoming return to the radio.
Fans and colleagues continue to send their well-wishes to Theakston as he focuses on his recovery. They hope he will be back on the airwaves before the end of the year.
