Rudy Giuliani Files for Bankruptcy Following Donald Trump Legal Woes
Former personal lawyer to ex-President Donald Trump and former Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after being ordered to pay $148 million in damages for defaming two election workers in Georgia. Giuliani falsely accused Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss of interfering with the 2020 presidential election results.
The bankruptcy filing estimates Giuliani’s liabilities to be between $100,000,001 and $500 million.
Giuliani’s bankruptcy filing comes six days after the jury ordered him to pay nearly $150 million in damages to the election workers. On Wednesday, a federal judge ordered Giuliani to compensate the workers immediately to prevent him from hiding his financial assets.
However, the bankruptcy filing is unlikely to cancel the $148 million he owes to Freeman and Moss, as bankruptcy law does not permit dissolving debts from ‘willful and malicious inquiry’ to others.
Giuliani’s spokesman, Ted Goodman, said the bankruptcy filing would give him time to appeal the defamation verdict. He added that no person could have reasonably believed that Giuliani would be able to pay such a high punitive amount.
Last week, Giuliani’s attorney, Joe Sibley, told the jury that the financial damages that Freeman and Moss were seeking would be the “civil equivalent of the death penalty.”
