Femicide in Turkey
Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, with 393 women killed by men in 2022 alone, according to data from the ‘Monument Counter’, which is a digital memorial for women killed by violence and is updated daily. This problem increased after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July 2021.
The Istanbul Convention is a treaty aimed at preventing violence against women and domestic violence. Its withdrawal has sparked a backlash from women’s rights groups, who say that it will lead to an increase in femicides.
