Taoiseach Simon Harris Set to Meet Families of Stardust Victims
Taoiseach Simon Harris has scheduled a meeting with the families affected by the tragic Stardust fire, preceding an anticipated formal State apology next week.
The jury’s recent verdict concluded that all 48 victims were unlawfully killed on February 14, 1981, with the fire originating from an electrical fault in a hot press.
After a 43-year pursuit of justice for their loved ones, members of the Stardust families are adamant about receiving a formal apology for the State’s handling of the nightclub disaster in Artane, Dublin.
Responding to their plea, the Taoiseach invited the families for a meeting at Government Buildings, which they promptly accepted.
Expressing his desire to issue an apology on behalf of the country, Mr Harris underscored the importance of first hearing directly from the families.
Following the meeting, the Taoiseach is expected to confirm his intention to deliver a formal State apology in the Dáil on Tuesday, during the scheduled time for statements on the inquest verdicts.
In addition to engaging with government officials, the families are slated to meet Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald this morning.
Sinn Féin has pledged to table a motion in the Dáil next week, calling for a full State apology to the Stardust families and survivors, further amplifying the call for acknowledgement and restitution.
