Dublin Airport Security Forces Woman to Remove Breast Prosthesis During Screening
A woman travelling from Dublin to Donegal recently recounted a distressing experience at Dublin Airport, where she was compelled to remove her breast prosthesis in public view, leading to tears and humiliation.
Réaltán Ní Leannáin, an author and breast cancer survivor from Belfast, expressed shock as she had never encountered such a request during her travels before.
According to Ms Ní Leannáin, a female security attendant, they instructed her to remove the prosthesis after it appeared on the body scanner during her journey last month.
She felt she had to comply despite the public setting and lack of alternative arrangements during the screening process.
The incident occurred during a hectic period at the airport, just before St. Patrick’s Day, adding to the discomfort and embarrassment felt by Ms Ní Leannáin. She highlighted the need for sensitivity and understanding, especially for post-mastectomy patients like herself, during security screenings.
Reflecting on her experience, Ms Ní Leannáin emphasised the importance of having a clear protocol for post-mastectomy travellers and providing adequate notice and options for such passengers before they undergo scanning procedures at airports.
Following the public outcry and Ms Ní Leannáin’s complaint, the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) thoroughly investigated the incident.
The airport operator acknowledged that the situation should have been handled more compassionately and stated that passengers in similar circumstances can request private screenings with trained staff members.
In response to the incident, DAA formally apologised to Ms Ní Leannáin and assured her that steps have been taken to prevent such distressing situations. The apology also highlighted the airport’s commitment to treating all passengers, especially those with specific medical needs, with dignity and respect during security checks.
The recent incident highlights air travellers’ difficulties with medical conditions or special requirements and emphasises the need for increased awareness and sensitivity among airport security personnel worldwide.
Moving forward, there is a growing consensus among travellers and advocacy groups for airports to implement more explicit guidelines and training for handling medical devices and conditions during security screenings, ensuring a more dignified and seamless experience for all passengers.
