Stephanie Mueller, a 70-year-old transgender attorney, has garnered attention in a Washington state courtroom due to her choice of attire while defending a client.

During a recent appearance in a Seattle court, Mueller garnered notice for wearing a low-cut blue top that emphasised her surgically enhanced breasts, accompanied by skin-tight black leather pants and boots, along with bold makeup.

Journalist Jonathan Choe captured Mueller’s outfit in a video shared on social media, highlighting the unusual attire for a legal setting as she represented a client involved in disrupting a council meeting.

Mueller’s client, Iris Boardman, faces charges of first-degree criminal trespassing stemming from her activism during the meeting above, as reported by Choe.

Despite the video evidence showing her client’s involvement, Mueller staunchly defended Boardman’s innocence, stating outside the courtroom that she had pleaded not guilty and maintained her innocence.

Seattle’s courtroom guidelines mandate “respectful business or office attire” during legal proceedings, raising questions about the appropriateness of Mueller’s courtroom outfit.

While some observers may find Mueller’s attire distracting or inappropriate, she maintains that since her transition in 2012, she has been treated respectfully and accepted within the legal community.

Mueller’s case highlights ongoing discussions about inclusivity and diversity in professional settings, particularly within the legal field, and the balance between personal expression and professional norms.

"Additionally, I am also a distinctive and active voice for the civil rights of all with a particular awareness for transgender rights," Mueller continued.
