A Dublin school teacher shared his experience of being cyberbullied by a student within his school community.
Speaking at the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland (ASTI) annual convention in Wexford, Ciarán Kavanagh revealed how a student created a fake TikTok account using his photo from LinkedIn.
The students and others crafted what they perceived as a humorous video using images of teachers from the school, which circulated among classmates throughout the year. Despite the distress caused, Mr Kavanagh acknowledged the supportive stance of school management and the involvement of law enforcement in identifying the student behind the video.
Despite considering leaving the school, Mr Kavanagh was dissuaded by the school management.
Reflecting on the experience, he expressed the emotional toll it took, highlighting the sense of vulnerability and questioning one’s actions that such incidents evoke.
The ASTI convention saw unanimous support for a motion advocating more vital legislation addressing online harassment.
A recent ASTI survey revealed that nearly one in five secondary school teachers have encountered work-related cyberbullying.
Minister for Education Norma Foley condemned such behaviour, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe environment for teachers to fulfil their duties. The ASTI conference, attended by 500 second-level teachers, discusses various motions related to pay, working conditions, student welfare, and school resources.
Among the motions debated, one calls for a member ballot on industrial action if unpaid ‘Croke Park’ hours are not addressed by the beginning of the 2025/26 school year.
Another motion seeks to restore teachers’ sick leave entitlements to pre-2008 levels, reflecting ongoing concerns within the teaching community.
The convention allows educators to voice their grievances and advocate for improved working conditions and rights.
As discussions continue, the ASTI remains committed to representing its members’ interests and addressing challenges educators face nationwide.
