A controversial incident unfolded in the Polish parliament as Grzegorz Braun, a far-right MP from the Confederation party, ignited outrage by extinguishing a menorah during a Jewish community event.
Braun took a fire extinguisher from the parliamentary lobby, forcefully putting out the candles and prompting the evacuation of individuals by security.
Seizing the opportunity at the chamber’s podium, Braun went on to label Hanukkah as ‘satanic’ and claimed his actions were an attempt to restore ‘normality’.
The gathering, attended by members of Poland’s Jewish community, including children, had been organized at the invitation of parliament speaker Szymon Holownia.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, raising concerns about religious tolerance and the safety of cultural events within the parliamentary setting. Authorities are now faced with addressing the fallout from Braun’s actions and ensuring the well-being of those affected by the disruption.
Footage from the scene shows several of those present covered in white powder from the extinguisher.
Magdalena Gudzinska-Adamczyk, one of the ceremony’s attendees, was shown challenging Mr Braun as he sprayed the menorah.
Speaking to journalists afterwards, she said: ‘This is my religious symbol; I have the right to defend it because we live in a free, democratic country.’
With her face covered in white powder, she told TVN24: ‘I feel very short of breath and have trouble speaking.
‘I have stopped feeling safe in this country.’

Mr. Holownia has prevented Mr. Braun from participating in parliament before a confidence vote in the newly appointed Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.
Following his actions, Mr Braun will be reported to prosecutors, face a salary reduction for three months, and lose parliamentary expenses for six months.
Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich expressed embarrassment over Mr Braun’s behaviour, stating it doesn’t reflect the country’s views. Schudrich highlighted the resilience symbolized by relighting Hanukkah candles despite historical adversities.
