Queen Camilla Faces Anti-Monarchy Chants: Protesters Shout ‘Down with the Crown

Protesters chanted “down with the crown” as Queen Camilla arrived at Worcester Cathedral for the annual Maundy Service. King Charles was absent, receiving cancer treatment.

The atmosphere turned tense as members of the anti-monarchy group Republic displayed large yellow signs, expressing their discontent with Queen Camilla’s presence at the service.

Despite King Charles’ absence, plans are underway for him to join other members of the Royal Family for a scaled-down Easter service at Windsor Castle on Sunday. This marks his first public appearance since his cancer diagnosis was announced in February.

While unable to attend in person, King Charles aims to address the nation through a recorded video message, expressing gratitude to those offering support during his challenging health journey.

The absence of King Charles at this year’s Maundy Thursday church service marks a significant departure from tradition, with Queen Camilla representing the monarchy in his stead. Previously, in 2022, the Prince of Wales stood in for Queen Elizabeth II at the same service.

Last year, both King Charles and Queen Camilla attended the Maundy Thursday service at York Minster. However, Republic, a campaign group advocating for the abolition of the monarchy, seized the opportunity to voice their dissent, displaying banners calling for abolition.

Speaking on behalf of Republic, Graham Smith underscored that their protest targets the institution of monarchy itself, rather than the individual members of the royal family. He reiterated the group’s unwavering commitment to their cause until their objectives are met.

The clash between monarchy supporters and protesters highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the role of the royal family in modern society, particularly amidst calls for reform and greater transparency.

Despite the controversy, Queen Camilla remained composed as she made her way into the cathedral, acknowledging the presence of both supporters and dissenters.
