Nikki Haley scored a significant win by defeating Donald Trump in the Republican primary in Washington DC, marking her first victory over the former president in the 2024 campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. Despite losing in her home state of South Carolina, Haley made history as the first woman to win a Republican primary in US history.

However, Trump still maintains a substantial lead over Haley and is expected to face Joe Biden in the November election. Haley secured all 19 Republican delegates available in Washington DC, adding to her total of 43 delegates nationwide, far behind Trump’s 247.

With a decisive 62.9% of the vote compared to Trump’s 33.2%, Haley’s victory is considered symbolic, given that Washington DC leans heavily Democratic, with only a small number of registered Republicans. Approximately 2,035 Republicans participated in the primary, according to local party officials.

Olivia Perez-Cubas, the national spokesperson for Haley’s campaign, commented that rejecting Trump and his “chaos” by Republicans close to the dysfunction in Washington is not surprising.

Despite Haley’s win, Trump has dominated the Republican campaign, winning every state primary or caucus thus far. The upcoming Super Tuesday, featuring voters from 15 states and one US territory, will further shape the race, with 874 Republican delegates up for grabs.
