Ireland Likely to Impose Travel Ban on Israeli Settlers as EU Disagreement Persists

M10news – Ireland is considering imposing a travel ban on Israeli settlers in the West Bank as a way of protesting against Israel’s occupation and expansion of settlements. The Irish government is working on implementing the ban but has not given a timeline for when it will be in place. The ban would prevent Israeli settlers from entering Ireland or using Irish airports.

The move comes after the European Union disagreed on a common position on sanctions against Israel due to Hungary’s veto. Ireland and Spain had written a letter to the European Commission, asking for a review of the EU-Israel trade agreement containing a human rights clause. The Commission has not yet responded to the letter.

The United States, on the other hand, has already imposed visa bans on Israeli settlers in the West Bank since December 2023. The US has also backed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, where Israel has been conducting a military operation since February 10, 2024. The operation has killed more than 200 Palestinians and injured over 1,000, according to the UN.

Ireland has expressed its support for the UN resolution and urged Israel to stop its attacks on Gaza. Ireland has also called for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on the 1967 borders and with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.

Ireland has been a vocal critic of Israel’s policies and actions in the occupied Palestinian territories and has recognized the state of Palestine since 2018.
