African Leaders Stand Against Israeli Offensive in Gaza

African leaders have strongly condemned Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The African Union (AU), representing 55 African states, called for an immediate halt to the Israeli offensive during its summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh attended the summit and thanked African leaders for their support.

Moussa Faki, the chair of the AU Commission, denounced Israel’s actions as a grave violation of international humanitarian law and urged a revival of African solidarity to address the crisis.

Azali Assoumani, President of Comoros and outgoing AU chairperson, praised South Africa’s legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice, condemning what he termed as “genocide” in Palestine.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, hosting the Non-Aligned Movement conference, also criticised Israel’s campaign, calling for a peaceful resolution.

Museveni labelled Israel’s actions as “unacceptable” and “inhumane,” while Buhari reaffirmed support for Palestinian self-determination.

The condemnation by African leaders reflects historical ties with the Palestinian cause and concerns for civilian welfare.

Many African nations, having faced colonialism, empathise with Palestinians living under occupation.

Despite challenges, including normalisation of relations by some African countries with Israel, the leaders stand committed to a comprehensive, respectful resolution of the conflict.

The African stance underscores a willingness to engage constructively in the peace process while navigating diplomatic complexities and global pressures.
