Advanced AI Search Experience Arrives
Google has rolled out its new AI Mode in Ireland, introducing what the company calls its most powerful and intelligent search experience yet.
Gemini AI Model Behind the Upgrade
The new system is powered by a custom version of Google’s Gemini AI, offering more advanced reasoning and the ability to handle complex, multi-step questions in a single query.
AI Mode Accessible on All Devices
Starting today, users across Ireland will see an AI Mode tab on Google’s search results page, and the feature will also appear within the Google app for both Android and iOS.
Multimodal Search Capabilities
Google says the new feature is fully multimodal, allowing people to ask questions through text, voice, or camera, and receive detailed answers tailored to their needs.
Concerns Over Website Traffic
Some companies and publishers have raised concerns that AI overviews—which summarise information at the top of results—could reduce web traffic, as users may rely solely on the summaries rather than visiting sites.
Google Defends AI Overviews
Google, however, insists that AI Mode encourages more diverse web traffic, claiming users are visiting a broader range of sites for in-depth answers.
The company added that “clicks from AI overviews are of higher quality”, as users spend more time on the pages they access.
Factuality and Ranking Systems
The tech giant said the new AI Mode is still built on its core quality and ranking systems, but with new approaches to improving factual accuracy and reliability.
Fallback to Traditional Results
While AI Mode aims to answer most questions directly, Google said it would revert to standard search results in cases where its system has low confidence in the information provided.
Commitment to Ongoing Improvements
“As with any early-stage AI product, it won’t always be right,” Google said in a statement. “But we are committed to continuous improvement as users begin exploring this new experience.”
