Serena Williams, the retired tennis legend, has confirmed that her recent slimmer physique is due to weight loss medication.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion retired from professional tennis in 2022 but has maintained a healthy lifestyle through exercise and a carefully planned diet.
However, following the birth of her two daughters, Alexis Olympia, seven, and Adira River, two, Williams struggled to return to her pre-pregnancy weight.

“I never was able to get to the weight I needed to be no matter what I did, no matter how much I trained,” Williams told People magazine.
She explained that despite her efforts, her body “just wouldn’t respond” in the way it had previously.
Williams opted to use a GLP-1 treatment, a medication designed to regulate appetite. Popular brands include Ozempic and Mounjaro. She said the therapy helped her overcome challenges with weight management after pregnancy.

“It was very frustrating to do all the same things and never be able to change that number on the scale or the way my body looked,” she said.
Williams, 43, emphasised that she had never taken shortcuts during her career and sought medical guidance before beginning treatment. She started injections six months after the birth of her youngest child.
The sports star acknowledged the controversy surrounding so-called weight loss drugs but stressed that her decision was based on health rather than appearance.
Fans reacted with mixed opinions on social media. Some criticised her choice, claiming it undermined her previous image, while others praised her honesty and openness about her journey.

Williams addressed the pressures of beauty standards, saying: “Women often experience judgment about their bodies at any size, and I’m no stranger to that. You should love yourself at any size and any look.”
She added that losing weight should not alter self-perception. “I’ve never felt that pressure to maintain a certain appearance. I always felt comfortable at any size, whether I was a lot heavier or not.”
Williams’ recent social media posts have highlighted her slimmer figure, including a mirror selfie in a crop top and a beach outing in a swimsuit.

She also explained that while her body had changed post-pregnancy, the medication allowed her to reach a healthy weight safely.
The former Olympic athlete’s revelation adds to broader discussions about the use of GLP-1 drugs among public figures.
Williams continues to emphasise that her journey is about wellness and self-care, encouraging women to prioritise health over external pressures.
