A Garda has been suspended from duty after the death of a man who suffered serious injuries during an interaction with officers in Dublin city centre.
The 51-year-old man was involved in an incident with Gardaí near the Holiday Inn on O’Connell Street at around 4.15am last Friday. He later died in hospital from his injuries.
Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, confirmed it has launched an independent criminal investigation into the circumstances of the case. One of its on-call investigators attended the scene shortly after the incident.

The watchdog said it has been liaising closely with the Dublin City Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist regarding the post-mortem examination.
In a statement, An Garda Síochána confirmed:
“A member of An Garda Síochána based in the Dublin region has been suspended from duty in connection with an ongoing investigation being carried out by the Office of the Police Ombudsman, Fiosrú.”
Fiosrú has issued an appeal for witnesses, particularly drivers — including taxi operators — who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage from the O’Connell Street area at the time of the incident.
The independent investigation team is working directly with the deceased man’s family through its family liaison officer.
Under law, Gardaí are required to notify the ombudsman of any case involving death or serious harm following an interaction with a member of the force.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Fiosrú on 0818 600 800 or email info@fiosru.ie.
