US President Donald Trump has confirmed he will meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska next Friday, marking the first face-to-face talks between Washington and Moscow since 2021.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “Further details to follow,” without elaborating on the format or duration of the meeting.
Earlier, the president told reporters the talks would focus on ending the war in Ukraine, adding that the meeting had been delayed due to necessary security arrangements.
“It could have been sooner, but I guess there are security arrangements that, unfortunately, people have to make. Otherwise, I’d do it much quicker. He would, too. He’d like to meet as soon as possible. I agree with it,” Trump said.
The planned summit will be the first high-level engagement between a US president and Putin since Joe Biden met the Russian leader in Geneva four years ago.
White House officials have yet to release further details about the agenda, but the announcement comes amid heightened diplomatic interest in potential pathways to a negotiated end to the Ukraine conflict.
