A millionaire trophy hunter from Texas has been killed by a charging Cape Buffalo while on safari in South Africa, in a deadly turn of events during what was meant to be a high-end hunting expedition.
Asher Watkins, 52, was tracking a 1.3-tonne buffalo—nicknamed “Black Death” for its notorious aggression—on Sunday in the expansive 50,000-acre Bambisana concession in Limpopo Province when the animal suddenly charged.

Travelling at an estimated 35mph, the buffalo gored Watkins with its powerful horns, reportedly killing him almost instantly. The incident occurred while Watkins was accompanied by a professional guide and a tracker.
The safari company, Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, confirmed the fatal attack, stating: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend Asher Watkins from the USA. He was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo.”

Asher’s mother Gwen, brother Amon, and stepfather Tony were at the lodge at the time.
His teenage daughter Savannah and ex-wife Courtney, who remain in the United States, have been contacted by the safari operator and are said to be devastated.
Courtney Watkins, speaking on behalf of their daughter, said: “Our hearts are heavy as we navigate the days ahead, especially for Savannah as she grieves her dad. We’ve been in a state of shock and heartbreak ever since, trying to process not just the loss, but the complexity that comes with it.”

Watkins, a wealthy ranch trader and founder of Watkins Ranch Group, was known for marketing luxury ranches priced from £1 million to £30 million. He frequently shared photos on social media of himself posing next to hunted animals, including mountain lions and birds of prey.
While hunting in Argentina, he once boasted of killing thousands of doves over a three-day period. Watkins publicly defended his hunting lifestyle, claiming it played a role in wildlife conservation.
A close friend said the Texan devoted much of his personal time to his daughter. “He spent every spare moment he could with Savannah and nobody could love a daughter more than he did. She will be broken to lose Asher, who was her best friend as well as her dad.”

Another friend, Shannon Wherry, wrote online: “In a moment of fearlessness, as he lived his life, he met the challenge head-on, leaving this world a man of courage, faith and adventure.”
Cape Buffalos are among the most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa, with males weighing up to 1.5 tonnes. The animals are known for their unpredictable behaviour, aggression, and ability to charge without provocation. Their horns are joined by a thick boss—a solid block of bone that can fatally crush opponents.

According to the safari website, buffalo are responsible for multiple hunter deaths each year. “The buffalo is regarded as the most dangerous animal to pursue in Africa,” it reads. “Crafty and belligerent, he seeks refuge in thickets and charges unprovoked. Prepare for the worst.”
Asher Watkins’ body is expected to be repatriated to the United States in the coming days. A memorial service is being arranged by his family.
