An Oklahoma man has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly shot the husband of a woman he had been dating during a confrontation in a parking lot last week, telling police he feared he wouldn’t win a physical fight.
The suspect, 21-year-old Micah Hill, admitted to investigators that he fired two rounds at the victim during an altercation outside the Biomat USA Plasma Centre in Edmond, Oklahoma.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by local outlet KOCO, Hill said he felt cornered and scared, claiming the shooting was an act of self-defence.
“I couldn’t do anything unless I shot him,” Hill reportedly told police during questioning, citing prior threats and intimidation from the man, who has not yet been publicly identified.
Suspect Claims Fear and Intimidation
The altercation occurred Tuesday while Hill was at the plasma donation facility with his girlfriend—the victim’s wife, according to authorities. While she was inside the center, her husband confronted Hill in the parking lot.
Hill told police he remained inside his car as tensions escalated but said he eventually stepped out with a firearm when the man became increasingly aggressive. The affidavit states that Hill recalled the man having “previously spit in his face” and made threatening gestures on earlier occasions.
Hill said he feared for his safety and alleged the victim began to “pretty much lunge” at him, prompting him to fire twice.
Chaos Inside the Plasma Center
The aftermath of the shooting caused panic inside the facility, as bystanders rushed to help the injured man. A 911 caller from inside the building described the scene in harrowing detail.
“A gentleman walked in and was yelling, ‘Help, help, I need help. He shot me. He shot me,’” the caller said, according to the affidavit.
One witness, Jacob McDonald, who was waiting to donate plasma, told KFOR that the victim stumbled through the door before collapsing.
“He collapsed and doubled over,” McDonald said. “That’s when we saw he had a gunshot wound in his back. Then the shooter came after him and explained to us that this man had approached him.”
McDonald said the shooter did not attempt to flee the scene and instead appeared to be trying to justify his actions to bystanders and staff.
Self-Defense Claim Under Scrutiny
Hill was arrested at the scene and later charged with assault with a deadly weapon, a felony offense in Oklahoma. He remains in custody pending a bond hearing.
His claim of self-defense has sparked legal debate in the community, as Oklahoma has broad but conditional “Stand Your Ground” and “Castle Doctrine” laws. These statutes allow individuals to use deadly force when facing an imminent threat, but the application is not automatic in cases involving disputes between known parties—especially when the confrontation could have been avoided.
“Self-defense laws in Oklahoma require a reasonable belief that one’s life was in danger,” said legal analyst Tara Mayfield. “Whether or not Hill’s belief was reasonable will likely become a focal point at trial.”
Police have not released the victim’s condition, but he was reportedly hospitalised after the incident. It remains unclear whether additional charges, such as attempted murder, will be filed based on the outcome of the investigation and the victim’s medical status.
Romantic Entanglement Behind the Violence
The shooting has drawn attention not only because of its brazen nature but also due to the underlying romantic conflict. The woman at the center of the dispute has not spoken publicly, and it is unknown whether she was aware her husband was going to confront Hill at the plasma center.
Neighbors and social media users have expressed concern over how quickly the confrontation turned deadly—and the role that firearms played in escalating what may have otherwise been a verbal altercation.
“It’s sad that a love triangle ended like this,” said one local resident, who declined to be named. “It shows how easily emotions and weapons can combine into tragedy.”
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
The Edmond Police Department has urged anyone with additional information or video footage from the parking lot to come forward, as they continue to piece together the events that led to the shooting.
“While one person is in custody, our investigation is ongoing, and we want to ensure we’ve spoken to every possible witness,” a police spokesperson said.
As Oklahoma grapples with rising gun incidents involving interpersonal conflicts, this case highlights the ongoing tension between Second Amendment rights and public safety in situations involving intimate partners and volatile relationships.
