Simone Biles turned heads at the 2025 ESPY Awards by stepping onto the red carpet in a couture gown crafted from the same material as her workout gear.
The Olympic gymnast collaborated with designer Zac Posen and activewear brand Athleta, for which she is an ambassador, to create a dress that blended performance functionality with red carpet glamour.
The floor-length gown, designed with Athleta’s signature four-way stretch fabric, was a tribute to Biles’ athletic roots. The shimmering blue dress featured a square neckline, structured short sleeves, and a dramatic open back — a design element inspired by Biles’ favourite workout T-shirt from the brand, known for its distinctive open-back silhouette.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, the dazzling ensemble was adorned with hundreds of tiny bugle beads and required the craftsmanship of 25 artisans, taking more than 1,000 hours to complete. The effort paid off in a design that reflected Biles’ movement, strength, and style.
Zac Posen, who now serves as vice president and creative director of Gap Inc., described the project as an opportunity to merge couture with performance. “Using Athleta’s performance fabric allowed me to explore a new kind of couture — one that marries functionality with elegance,” he said, adding that the dress was meant to celebrate Biles’ power and identity.
Biles, 28, attended the event with her husband, NFL star Jonathan Owens, who plays safety for the Chicago Bears. Her ensemble was completed with diamond accessories from Effy Jewelry and heels from Aquazzura, which remained hidden beneath the sweeping hemline.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Biles described the collaboration as a memorable experience. “It was our first time working together, and I loved how we each brought something unique to the table,” she said of her partnership with Posen.
The gymnast’s standout appearance extended beyond fashion. During the awards ceremony, Biles was honoured with two major accolades:
Best Athlete in Women’s Sports and Best Championship Performance. She delivered an emotional acceptance speech thanking those who supported her career.
“The recognition means more than you guys know,” Biles said on stage, addressing the audience with sincerity. She credited her success to those around her, saying, “I would like to thank the people who have stood with me on this journey — my teammates, my competitors, my coaches, family and fans who have lifted me up every step of the way.”
“I wouldn’t be standing here without all of you,” she concluded, her voice resonating with gratitude and pride.
