A British mother has died after encountering difficulties while swimming off the coast of Corfu, Greece, in a tragic incident witnessed by her teenage son.
The woman and her husband had been enjoying the sea off Roda Beach in northern Corfu on Wednesday when the situation took a fatal turn. Their 16-year-old son remained on the shore as the couple entered the water.
According to local reports, weather conditions quickly deteriorated and strong currents developed, making it difficult for swimmers to return to safety.
Some Greek media outlets suggested the pair may have been swept toward a rocky outcrop by the current.
The father was rescued and pulled to safety by responders, but the mother could not be reached in time. Witnesses said the son and father were forced to watch helplessly from shore as rescuers attempted to reach her.
The woman was eventually retrieved from the water unconscious, according to Corfu Press. Emergency teams transported her to a private clinic nearby, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Her body was then transferred to Corfu General Hospital for further examination.
The woman’s husband reportedly sustained minor injuries during the ordeal. Both he and their son were treated for shock and received psychological support from medical professionals at the hospital.
Authorities are conducting a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
Investigators are working to establish whether she drowned or suffered a fatal injury, possibly from being pushed against rocks by the force of the sea.
The British Embassy in Greece has been informed, and support is being provided to the family through consular services. The identity of the woman has not yet been released, pending formal notification of extended family.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over the popular tourist resort of Roda, which draws thousands of visitors annually.
Greek authorities have advised swimmers to remain cautious, especially during periods of unpredictable weather and strong sea currents.
