Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing the former president’s role in mediating conflicts in the Middle East, including a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
The announcement was made during a White House dinner, where Netanyahu handed Trump a nomination letter. “Coming from you in particular, this is very meaningful,” Trump said in response. The Israeli leader described Trump as “forging peace as we speak, one country and one region after the other.”
The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded annually by a committee in Norway, recognises individuals or organisations that make significant contributions to international peace, including reductions in armed conflict and the promotion of diplomacy.
Trump Claims Credit for Ceasefire with Iran
Trump has claimed his administration was responsible for halting a recent “12-day war” between Israel and Iran, attributing the de-escalation to U.S. military strikes that he says destroyed Iran’s nuclear weapons infrastructure.
“We have scheduled Iran talks, and they want to,” Trump told reporters Monday. “They want to talk.”
Iranian officials have not publicly confirmed negotiations. However, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told U.S. broadcaster Tucker Carlson in a recent interview that Iran is open to resolving tensions with Washington through dialogue.
Pezeshkian also said Tehran would consider resuming cooperation with the UN’s nuclear watchdog, though full access to nuclear facilities remains off the table due to damage from recent U.S. strikes.
Gaza Ceasefire Talks and Hostage Deal in Motion
Amid ongoing violence in Gaza, Trump has suggested that a 60-day ceasefire agreement could be reached this week.
Negotiations involving Hamas and intermediaries are reportedly focused on securing the release of up to 50 remaining Israeli hostages and boosting humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the enclave.
According to the White House, U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is currently en route to Qatar to help finalise the terms of the potential deal.
If successful, the ceasefire would mark a rare breakthrough in a conflict that has intensified in recent months, despite numerous international appeals for restraint.
Ukraine War Remains Unresolved
While Trump has previously vowed to end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours” if re-elected, the conflict continues unabated.
Ukrainian officials reported last week that Russia had launched its most intense aerial assault since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Critics argue that Russian President Vladimir Putin is manipulating the U.S. president’s rhetoric for strategic gain, with little intention of agreeing to a comprehensive peace deal.
Political Implications and Global Reactions
Netanyahu’s nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize is likely to deepen divisions among international observers, especially amid criticism that peace remains elusive in regions where Trump claims to be brokering deals.
The nomination comes at a time when the U.S. election campaign is heating up, and Trump is seeking to frame his foreign policy record as one of bold action and global impact.
Whether the Nobel Committee will consider the nomination remains to be seen. However, the move underscores how deeply international diplomacy has become entwined with domestic political calculations in both Washington and Jerusalem.
