Zamora, Spain – Portugal and Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car crash in northwestern Spain, along with his younger brother André Jota, Spanish authorities have confirmed.
The fatal accident occurred on Thursday morning near Sanabria, in the province of Zamora.
According to reports from Spanish outlet Marca and confirmed by the Guardia Civil, the crash happened after a tyre blowout caused Jota’s Lamborghini to veer off-road while overtaking another vehicle. The car subsequently caught fire.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene but were unable to save either of the two men. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Tragic End to a Celebrated Career
Diogo Jota, 28, had only recently celebrated a personal milestone, marrying long-time partner Rute Cardoso on 22 June.
The couple shared three young children. His final Instagram post, shared just a day before the crash, was a video from their wedding.

Jota had been a central figure at Liverpool FC since joining the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £40 million transfer in 2020.

He played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning season under Arne Slot, scoring nine goals and earning praise for his versatility and work rate.
His brother, André Jota, 26, was also a professional footballer and most recently played for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel. It is not yet clear which of the brothers was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Tributes Pour In
Liverpool FC, the Portuguese Football Federation, and current and former teammates are expected to release official statements in the coming hours as tributes pour in from across the football world.
Jota’s sudden passing marks a devastating blow for the football community in both England and Portugal, where he was regarded as one of the most talented forwards of his generation.
