Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer could be forced to resign within months if the party suffers heavy defeats in upcoming elections, senior political sources have warned.
A current member of the UK government and a prominent Labour MP, speaking separately to Sky News deputy political editor Sam Coates, both delivered the same stark assessment of Starmer’s leadership prospects.
“Both put the Prime Minister on notice,” Coates reported. “They told me that if Labour underperforms in the elections next May — which include votes in Scotland, for the Senedd in Wales, and key contests in London — that could be the end of Starmer’s leadership.”

The comments reflect growing unease within Labour’s ranks as the party faces rising threats in traditional strongholds.
In Wales, recent polling shows Reform UK making significant gains, while in London, the Greens and other parties to Labour’s left are gaining traction, raising fears of widespread losses.
Such outcomes in Labour heartlands would be seen as disastrous for Starmer, who has been under pressure from both inside and outside the party to consolidate support.
“The level of unhappiness and despair within parts of the Labour Party is so striking that even now, just one year into Starmer’s premiership, I’m hearing suggestions from ministers that he might have to go within months,” Coates added.
Starmer’s leadership, once seen as a stabilising force after years of internal party division, is now facing its most serious test since Labour returned to power.
Party officials have so far declined to comment on the growing speculation surrounding Starmer’s future. However, allies insist the Prime Minister remains focused on delivering his agenda and preparing the party for the electoral challenges ahead.
