Iran and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire following days of escalating military exchanges that pushed the region to the brink of wider conflict. The agreement comes amid conflicting statements from leaders and growing diplomatic tension.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has claimed credit for mediating the ceasefire, publicly urged both nations not to “violate” the terms of the fragile deal. Speaking on his platform Truth Social, Trump called the truce “a major achievement” but warned that breaches would not be tolerated.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, issued a sharp warning of his own, stating that Israel would deliver a “forceful and immediate” response to any violation by Iran or its proxies. “Our military is on full alert, and we will not hesitate to act decisively to defend our people,” Netanyahu said in televised remarks from Tel Aviv.
Iranian state television has offered a different narrative, claiming that President Trump “begged” for the ceasefire to avoid further military escalation, particularly after U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend triggered a wave of Iranian retaliatory missile attacks targeting Israel and U.S. assets in the region.
Tensions between the two nations flared dramatically after the U.S. used bunker-busting bombs to strike multiple Iranian nuclear sites, prompting Iran to launch missiles at Israeli cities, including Beersheba, where three civilians were killed.
The ceasefire terms have not been fully disclosed, and skepticism remains over its durability given the deep-rooted hostilities. While both Tehran and Tel Aviv have signalled a pause in military operations, regional and international leaders continue to express concern that further provocations could reignite the conflict.
The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic channels working behind the scenes to maintain calm.
