A fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel is reportedly underway following a night of missile strikes that left at least three civilians dead in southern Israel and widespread uncertainty across the region
Iranian state television claimed early Monday that a ceasefire had begun, hours after missiles struck Beersheba in Israel’s south, killing a woman and two men when a residential building was hit, according to Israeli emergency services. Footage from the city showed significant structural damage.
Sirens were heard across multiple Israeli cities overnight, including Tel Aviv, where residents were urged to take shelter as explosions echoed over the city skyline. Israel’s military confirmed its defence systems had intercepted several incoming missiles, though assessments of total damage are ongoing.
The escalation follows the United States’ use of “bunker buster bombs” to target three key Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend—a move that dramatically heightened fears of a broader regional war.
Iran retaliated by launching missiles toward Israel and U.S. military installations in the region, including Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Iranian officials described the strike as a “mighty and successful response” to what they called “America’s aggression.”
Qatari authorities confirmed that no casualties occurred at Al Udeid, with its defence systems intercepting the missiles. Residents in the capital Doha were seen watching the skies as interceptors engaged incoming projectiles.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, addressing the situation via his Truth Social platform, claimed responsibility for brokering the ceasefire, declaring it a “complete and total” agreement.
According to Trump, the ceasefire was structured in phases, beginning with Iran halting hostilities at approximately 5 a.m. UK time, followed by Israel’s cessation of fire 12 hours later, and culminating in a formal end to what he termed the “12-Day War.”
Trump celebrated the deal, stating: “On the assumption everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both countries, Israel and Iran, for having the stamina, courage, and intelligence to end what should be called the ‘12-Day War.’”
However, doubts over the ceasefire emerged quickly. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi publicly contradicted Trump’s announcement, saying “no agreement” had been finalised but clarified that Iran “has no intention” of continuing its response provided Israel halts what Tehran called “illegal aggression.”
Israeli media suggested Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was willing to pause military operations if Iran stopped its attacks, though no formal Israeli government confirmation has been issued.
Speaking to NBC, Trump called the ceasefire a “great day” for both the U.S. and the Middle East, adding, “I think it’s going to go forever,” referring to the halt in fighting. “I don’t believe they’ll ever be shooting at each other again,” he said.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance echoed that sentiment in an interview with Fox News, claiming American strikes had crippled Iran’s nuclear weapons program. “Iran was very close to having a nuclear weapon,” he said. “Now, Iran is incapable of building a nuclear weapon with the equipment they have because we destroyed it.”
Meanwhile, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain briefly closed their airspace as a precautionary measure. Oman Air and Etihad Airways rerouted several flights amid ongoing concerns.
The UK Foreign Office updated travel advisories, urging British nationals in Qatar to shelter in place, citing heightened risks linked to the conflict.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei insisted Tehran’s response was measured, writing on X: “We have not violated anyone’s rights, nor will we ever accept anyone violating ours. We will not surrender to anyone’s violation; this is the logic of the Iranian nation.”
Regional security remains precarious, with international observers warning the situation could unravel without sustained diplomatic efforts.
