U.S. Vice President JD Vance has sharply criticized Elon Musk for suggesting President Donald Trump was linked to the Jeffrey Epstein files, calling it a “huge mistake” and warning that a continued feud between the two men could have serious consequences for the country — and for Musk himself.
Speaking during an interview on This Past Weekend with comedian and podcast host Theo Von, Vance offered a strong defence of Trump, insisting the former president had “done nothing wrong” in connection with Epstein and expressing disappointment in Musk’s recent social media outburst.
“I think it’s a huge mistake for him to go after the president like that,” Vance said. “If he and the president are in some blood feud, most importantly, it’s going to be bad for the country, but I think it won’t be good for Elon either.”
Musk ignited a firestorm on Thursday when he posted a provocative claim on his social media platform X, saying:
“Time to drop the really big bomb. [Trump] is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO added, “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.” The post has since been deleted, but not before it was widely circulated and drew backlash from Trump’s allies.

Vance, who has emerged as one of Trump’s most loyal lieutenants in the White House, said he believed Musk was acting out of frustration, possibly pushed over the edge by both political pressure and violent threats.
“His businesses are being attacked nonstop. They’re literally like firebombing some of his cars,” Vance said, referring to recent incidents targeting Tesla. “This guy got into politics and has suffered a lot for it. And I get the frustration.”
The vice president acknowledged Musk’s growing anger over the federal budget reconciliation bill, which sparked the recent row. Musk had accused Trump and Republican lawmakers of betraying core economic principles by supporting the measure.
“The bill isn’t perfect, but its main purpose is to prevent the largest tax increase we’ve seen in years,” Vance explained. “I understand Elon’s frustration. The process in D.C. is slow-moving and bureaucratic. If you’re a business leader used to speed and innovation, it probably drives you crazy.”
Still, Vance emphasised that none of that justified launching explosive accusations at the president.
“There’s a difference between policy disagreement and personal destruction,” he said. “Accusing someone of being involved with Epstein — that crosses a line. Especially when there’s no basis for it.”
He added, “I hope Elon comes back into the fold. Maybe that’s not possible now, because he’s gone so nuclear.”
The rift between Trump and Musk, once political allies, has deepened in recent days, with both men exchanging barbs over policy and personality. Trump reportedly dismissed the idea of repairing the relationship, telling NBC News last week: “I would assume so, yeah,” when asked if their relationship was over. When pressed if he had any interest in reconciliation, he replied, “No.”
While Vance remained steadfast in his support for Trump, he didn’t entirely shut the door on Musk rejoining their political camp.
“Look, it happens to everybody,” he said. “I’ve flown off the handle way worse than Elon Musk did in the last 24 hours.”
But with Trump reportedly considering a review of federal contracts awarded to Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, the stakes of the fallout are rising.
For now, the Oval Office appears to have room for only one billionaire.
