The billionaire former Tottenham Hotspur owner Joe Lewis entered a guilty plea to insider trading, raising the possibility of facing jail time. This is a huge move.

86-year-old magnate admitted to tipping off a network that included friends, lovers, personal assistants, and even private jet pilots with confidential information from his business boardrooms.

This revelation allowed the implicated individuals to make lucrative bets on companies where Lewis held a stake, leveraging information only accessible to those with insider knowledge. Prosecutors assert that these actions resulted in millions of dollars in illicit profits.

As part of a negotiated deal with prosecutors, Lewis confessed to securities fraud and conspiring to commit securities fraud through insider trading.

The agreement grants him the right to appeal any potential prison sentence. Currently, he remains at liberty on a substantial $300 million bond, secured by assets including his yacht, named the Aviva, and a private plane.

During proceedings, Lewis candidly acknowledged the wrongdoing, expressing embarrassment and extending an apology to the court. His bail conditions include travel restrictions, limiting him to specific US states where he owns property.

Federal prosecutors initially charged Lewis with 16 counts of securities fraud and three counts of conspiracy, covering alleged crimes spanning from 2013 to 2021. While he won’t plead guilty to all counts under the current agreement, the judge has reserved the right to consider them during sentencing.

The case extends beyond Lewis, involving two private jet pilots, Patrick O’Connor and Bryan Waugh, who also faced charges and entered not guilty pleas in July of last year.

US Attorney Damian Williams emphasized the broad application of the law, underscoring that wealth does not exempt individuals from accountability.

Lewis, whose wealth was amassed through the investment company Tavistock Group, relinquished control of Tottenham Hotspur in 2022. His stake was formally handed over to a family trust, and he no longer participates in the club’s day-to-day affairs.

With a net worth surpassing £5 billion, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, Lewis was ranked as the 39th richest individual in the UK. Tottenham Hotspur has refrained from commenting on the unfolding legal proceedings.
