Gardaí have confirmed that a new static speed safety camera on the N80 in Carlow will become operational from Friday, May 23.
The enforcement will begin at 12 noon, and drivers are being warned that any vehicles detected exceeding the 100km/h speed limit will face prosecution.
Motorists caught breaking the speed limit at this location will be issued with a Fixed Charge Notice, which currently carries a fine of €160 and three penalty points on the driver’s licence.
This new installation adds to a growing network of static safety cameras across Ireland. Other operational locations include the N17 in Mayo, the N59 in Galway, the N13 in Donegal, the N69 in Limerick, the R772 in Wexford, and the N22 in Cork. Initially, static cameras were introduced in the Dublin Port Tunnel and on the M7 motorway.
In addition to these, five Average Speed Safety Cameras are in use, covering roads such as the N3 in Cavan, the N5 in Mayo, and the N2 in Meath. These systems track a vehicle’s speed over a set distance rather than at a single point.
Currently, there are also 58 GoSafe mobile safety camera units operating across approximately 1,500 locations nationwide, complementing fixed camera sites and Garda-operated speed enforcement systems.
Unlike average speed cameras, static safety cameras monitor vehicle speeds at one specific point along the road. Gardaí have highlighted that such systems have proven effective internationally in reducing incidents of speeding.
Speeding continues to be one of the primary causes of fatal road collisions, and the introduction of this new camera on the N80 is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety across Ireland.
