A woman and two males allegedly attempted to shoplift at the Walmart Supercenter on Byberry Road, prompting a quick police reaction at around 11 p.m. on Thursday, according to NBC Philadelphia.
Security guards at the business said that to avoid arrest, the accused abandoned a three-month-old girl in their care.
The infant was promptly transported to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital for evaluation and was found to be in good condition.
While immediate details such as suspect descriptions or photographs are yet to be released, authorities claim to have identified the infant and have reached out to one of her parents, who is not believed to be connected to the attempted theft.
Authorities in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are actively seeking suspects involved in a recent Walmart shoplifting incident. The nature of the items the suspects were attempting to take remains undisclosed.
Residents with any information about the incident are strongly encouraged to contact the police department’s special victims unit.
This occurrence adds to several notable incidents at Walmart stores across the United States. Two years ago, a woman was arrested in Crockett, Texas, for allegedly approaching a mother at Walmart and offering to buy her one-year-old baby for $500,000. Additionally, in March 2021, Daquan Forehand, 25, shoplifted a pellet gun from a Walmart in Latham, New York, before attempting to use it in a car theft scheme later that day.
