A man in his 60s has been arrested following the seizure of over €10 million worth of cocaine after Gardaí intercepted a lorry on the M9 in Co Kilkenny.
The discovery was made yesterday morning as part of the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau’s ongoing investigations into organized crime.
Shortly after 10 am, officers stopped a heavy-goods vehicle and uncovered 152 kilograms of cocaine — valued at an estimated €10.6 million — hidden in a “sophisticated” concealment.
The arrested man was detained under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006, which targets individuals facilitating organized crime activities.
He remains in custody in the eastern region, where he can be questioned for up to seven days.
As part of the operation, Gardaí also searched two business premises and a home in Co Waterford.
Officers from the customs service, the stolen motor vehicle unit, and Garda dogs assisted in the investigation.
Assistant Commissioner Angela Willis, head of Organised & Serious Crime, praised the operation and stressed Gardaí’s commitment to tackling drug distribution and organized crime.
“I thank the public for their support and encourage everybody to play their part.
Report suspicious activity in confidence to the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111,” she said.
Forensic analysis of the seized substances is ongoing.
