US President Donald Trump has described recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a potential ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war as “very good.”
However, Trump also issued a warning about ‘terrible’ consequences if Russia refuses to support the proposed 30-day ceasefire.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump revealed that during his conversation with Putin, he urged the Russian leader to spare the lives of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers currently surrounded by the Russian military.
“We had excellent and productive discussions with President Vladimir Putin of Russia yesterday,” Trump wrote. “There is a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end — BUT, AT THIS VERY MOMENT, THOUSANDS OF UKRAINIAN TROOPS ARE COMPLETELY SURROUNDED BY THE RUSSIAN MILITARY, AND IN A VERY BAD AND VULNERABLE POSITION.”
Trump added, “I have strongly requested that President Putin spare their lives. This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II. God bless them all!!!“
Meanwhile, Putin, dressed in a military uniform, appeared on Kremlin TV during a visit to the Kursk region, where intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces has persisted since last summer.
On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed his willingness to accept the ceasefire proposal, but only if the US successfully convinces Russia to agree to the terms.
