MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Tuesday following an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant related to a crime against humanity investigation.
The 79-year-old former leader was taken into custody shortly after returning from a trip to Hong Kong, according to The Associated Press.
The ICC has been investigating the massive killings that occurred during Duterte’s controversial war on drugs. The inquiry centers on allegations of extrajudicial killings and other human rights violations that took place during his administration’s anti-drug campaign.
The arrest follows growing international pressure for accountability over the violence linked to Duterte’s policies. According to President Ferdinand Marcos’ office, the former president’s detention is part of the ongoing probe into alleged crimes against humanity.
Further updates are expected as the legal process unfolds.
