Tragedy struck in one of Nigeria’s most significant cities on Tuesday night, claiming the lives of two individuals and leaving 77 others injured following a powerful explosion that shook over a dozen buildings.
The governor of the southwestern state of Oyo, Seyi Makinde, disclosed the grim news on Wednesday as rescue teams worked tirelessly to sift through the debris in search of potential survivors.
The densely populated city of Ibadan, in Oyo state, was thrown into chaos at approximately 7:45 p.m. when a loud blast echoed through the air, prompting a frantic evacuation as residents fled their homes. Security forces swiftly secured the affected area while medical personnel and ambulances stood by, ready to assist in the intensified rescue efforts.
Preliminary findings from the investigation pointed to the explosion being caused by stored explosives intended for use in illegal mining operations, Governor Makinde informed reporters after personally inspecting the site in the Bodija area of Ibadan. He expressed the gravity of the situation, describing the damage as “devastating.”
Illegal mining has been a persistent issue in mineral-rich Nigeria, often raising concerns among authorities. Its prevalence in remote areas is challenging, making arrests difficult and safety protocols routinely neglected.
The identity of those responsible for storing the explosives remains unclear, with no arrests announced thus far. Governor Makinde assured the public that investigations were underway and pledged accountability, stating, “The investigations are ongoing, and all those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”
As for the injured, the majority of the 77 individuals have already been discharged, according to the governor. He promised to cover the medical expenses of those still receiving treatment and committed to providing temporary accommodations for those whose homes were affected by the tragic incident.
