A 43-year-old Green Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand, Golriz Ghahraman, has stepped down as justice spokesperson following allegations of shoplifting from upscale stores in Auckland and Wellington.

The accusations initially surfaced on December 23, with theft claims from Auckland’s Scotties Boutique. A subsequent incident at the same boutique is under investigation. Additional allegations emerged from the Wellington store, Cre8iveworx, which reported a shoplifting incident involving Ghahraman to the police on October 26.

The news came to light on January 10 through Newstalk ZB Plus. While police confirmed an investigation, they refrained from confirming individual identities. Ghahraman, addressing the allegations, cited mental health struggles related to her work, a sentiment corroborated by a mental health professional.

In a statement, Ghahraman expressed remorse, acknowledging her actions fell short of the expected standards for elected representatives. She emphasized her mental health challenges but took full responsibility for her regrettable behaviour.

Following her resignation, Green Party leaders Marama Davidson and James Shaw finally addressed the situation in a press conference. They acknowledged the human aspect of MPs, expressed disappointment in the circumstances, and highlighted the continuous threats of violence Ghahraman faced since her election. Despite potential criticisms, they emphasized her significant political achievements and community service.
