Pet Health Alert – Dog owners are being urged to avoid feeding their pets certain chew bones following reports of alarming symptoms linked to products manufactured in China.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned that these chews may cause sudden behavioral changes referred to as ‘werewolf syndrome.’
Symptoms include panic attacks, aggression, spasms, epileptic seizures, and, in severe cases, death. The warning follows a case in the Netherlands where a dog reportedly died after consuming cheese sticks and chew bones from the brand Barkoo.

Although the FSA has stated there is no confirmed distribution of the affected products in the UK and no cases have been reported locally, they are advising caution. Some UK consumers may have purchased the items from international sellers online.
Tina Potter, head of standards at the FSA, explained:
“While there is no confirmed distribution of affected products to the UK, there is the possibility that some consumers may have purchased these online.
As a precaution, we are advising dog owners to avoid feeding these chews to their pets until further notice.”
The agency emphasized that no unsafe dog chews have been officially identified in the UK, but investigations are ongoing internationally.
Pet owners are encouraged to monitor their dogs closely and consult a veterinarian if they notice unusual behavior.
