The Catholic Bishops of Nigeria have expressed their concern over the high level of corruption and violence in the country and urged the government to take action to improve the economy and reduce poverty.
He said that corruption involved various forms of dishonesty, abuse, and manipulation and that it had infected the lives of many Nigerians, young and old.
He said that corruption was one of the leading causes of millions of Nigerians’ widespread poverty, misery, and suffering.
He called on the government to enact laws to eliminate bribery and corruption and, improve workers’ working conditions, create more jobs, equip youths with skills, and provide for the spiritual and moral education of the people.
He also lamented the mindless bloodshed and kidnapping that had plagued Imo State and other parts of the country, especially in the south-east, where an armed group was fighting for the independence of Biafra.
He said that the armed group, which called itself the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), had killed several security operatives and attacked public buildings, such as prisons and police stations.
He said that the security forces, comprising the military, police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), had responded with excessive force and human rights violations, such as unlawful killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, and extortion.
He said that the security forces had also taken over the governance of many villages, where they imposed their laws and demanded fees for ceremonies and disputes.
He appealed to both sides to stop the violence and embrace dialogue and peace.
He also paid tribute to those who had lost their lives in various wars and armed conflicts and said that they deserved respect and honour for their patriotism and sacrifice.
He urged society to support the fallen heroes’ families facing hardship and difficulties.
