A 41-year-old Pamela Reed from Ohio is now at the centre of allegations involving a deceptive donation scam.
Reed stands accused of falsely asserting that her seven-year-old daughter, Addey Rae, was grappling with Acute Myeloid leukaemia. This claim served as the basis for a fundraising campaign supposedly benefiting “her daughter’s journey.
” The scheme, which raised thousands, took a disturbing turn as Reed not only propagated false information but also went to the extent of shaving her child’s head, accompanied by the posting of emotionally charged treatment photos online.
Legal action ensued on Monday as Reed faced charges of theft by deception. Upon discovering inconsistencies, the investigation gained traction when Addey’s elementary school nurse tipped off officers at the Noble County Sheriff’s Office, prompting a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged scam.
The gravity of the situation intensified with revelations that Addey was not blind in her right eye, contrary to Reed’s assertions. Beyond the false cancer claim, Reed painted a narrative involving frequent seizures for her daughter. Furthermore, Reed insisted that Addey would need a ‘port’ fitted into her body, facilitating drug administration without needles during cancer treatments.
This case underscores the potential consequences of exploiting sympathies for personal gain and the importance of vigilance in scrutinizing fundraising efforts. Authorities are actively pursuing the legal implications of Reed’s alleged deceptive actions.
