Manchester United Sacks Erik ten Hag After West Ham Defeat; Ruud van Nistelrooy Named Interim Manager
Manchester United has announced that Erik ten Hag has been sacked as first-team manager following a disappointing 2-1 loss to West Ham.
The decision conveyed to Ten Hag on Monday morning comes amid a challenging season for the club, currently positioned 14th in the Premier League with only three wins in nine games.
In a statement, Manchester United expressed gratitude for Ten Hag’s contributions since his appointment in April 2022. He noted his role in leading the team to two significant domestic triumphs—the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future,” the statement read.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the coaching staff this summer, has been tapped as interim head coach. The former United striker will manage the squad with the support of the current coaching team while the club seeks a permanent replacement for Ten Hag.
The decision also comes as United faces mounting difficulties in the Europa League. Under Ten Hag’s leadership, the team has drawn matches against FC Twente, Porto, and Fenerbahce. The club’s management is hopeful that the change in leadership will help stabilise the team’s performance and restore competitive momentum moving forward.
