Pop superstar Britney Spears has made a surprising revelation, sharing on social media that she married herself.
The 42-year-old singer posted a throwback video in which she is seen wearing a satin cream dress and veil, calling the act of marrying herself “the most brilliant thing I’ve ever done.”
Despite acknowledging that some may find it “embarrassing or stupid,” Spears expressed pride in her decision.
The timing and details of this unique union remain unclear. This announcement comes about a year after her high-profile divorce from Sam Asghari, 30. Spears and Asghari had been married for 14 months before their split, though they had been together since 2016. Their divorce was reportedly contentious, with accusations of infidelity on Spears’ part. The couple had no children together, though Spears has two sons, Sean and Jayden, from her previous marriage to Kevin Federline.
In the wake of her divorce from Asghari, Spears raised concerns among fans with a series of erratic social media posts.
In one such post, she directly addressed the end of their relationship, writing, “As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together… I couldn’t take the pain anymore, honestly.” She also thanked friends for offering her support during the difficult time.
Asghari also addressed the split in an Instagram statement, saying, “We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other… S**t happens. Asking for privacy seems ridiculous, so I will just ask everyone, including the media, to be kind and thoughtful.”
Court documents cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their divorce. The couple had wed in a celebrity-packed ceremony at Spears’ Thousand Oaks home in June 2022, with guests including Paris Hilton, Selena Gomez, and Madonna.
Spears released her memoir shortly after the divorce, sharing several bombshell revelations about her life in the spotlight. In the book, she claimed that her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake had pressured her into having an abortion during their early 2000s relationship.
She also detailed the trauma of her 13-year conservatorship, describing how it left her feeling like a “child robot” and an “entity” rather than a person. Spears wrote that her love for music was taken from her during this period, saying, “I always felt I had music in my bones and my blood; they stole that from me.”
This is not the first time Spears has made headlines for her personal life. Her first marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander in 2004 lasted just 55 hours before being annulled. Alexander later claimed he was misled into agreeing to the annulment under the promise that their romantic relationship would continue.
Spears’ second marriage to Kevin Federline came shortly after her Vegas wedding with Alexander. They married in 2004, just three months after meeting, but the relationship ended in divorce two years later. They share two sons, Sean and Jayden, and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split.
