A man has been arrested in Barcelona after slapping a one-year-old baby in the face during a violent outburst at Montjuïc park.
The shocking incident, captured on video, shows the man shouting at a family of tourists before mimicking the act of hitting the baby girl.
He then struck the child’s face, leaving her in distress.
According to local media reports, the man also threatened to kill the tourists, who were visiting the popular park for sightseeing. The man accompanying the child immediately picked her up and walked away, while the woman with them pushed a pram.
A bystander filming the incident urged the family to flee to France. The video captures the baby wailing as the attacker walks away up a flight of stairs lined with bushes.
The assault took place on Sunday during a rampage in Montjuïc, overlooking Barcelona’s Poble-Sec neighborhood, as reported by El Caso. Local police have since arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting “two men and a minor.” One of the victims, a 60-year-old man, sustained facial injuries and was hospitalized.
In an announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Catalonian police confirmed the arrest and revealed that the suspect has a lengthy criminal record. Following his arrest, the man was admitted to a psychiatric unit for evaluation.
The suspect is expected to appear in court by Wednesday, though his current condition may prevent him from giving a statement.
The court awaits a report on his mental capacity before deciding whether criminal proceedings can proceed.
