Israel has killed Saeed Atallah, the leader of Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, in an airstrike in northern Lebanon on Saturday, according to reports from Hamas-affiliated media.
Atallah was reportedly killed alongside three family members while inside a Palestinian refugee camp in the coastal city of Tripoli.
This strike is part of Israel’s ongoing military campaign aimed at eliminating Hezbollah and associated targets across Lebanon.
The operation follows the recent killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was reportedly “neutralised” in an Israeli attack on the terror organisation’s bunker headquarters in Beirut.
The expanded conflict with Hezbollah has resulted in significant civilian casualties, with over 2,000 reported deaths, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.
Israel has yet to comment on the airstrike in Tripoli, but the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) celebrated their military success on social media.
“Over the last four days, the IDF has eliminated 2,000+ military targets and 250 Hezbollah terrorists,” a post on the IDF’s X account stated, detailing the elimination of several high-ranking Hezbollah commanders.
Earlier this week, Israel faced a barrage of missiles from Iran, marking a clear escalation in the conflict as it nears the first anniversary of the ongoing violence. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that an attack on Iran’s nuclear-related facilities remains a possibility.
