Vice President Kamala Harris is facing scrutiny over her previous condemnations of domestic abuse and sexual assault perpetrators following a report detailing an incident involving her husband, Doug Emhoff.

The report alleges that Emhoff “forcefully slapped” an ex-girlfriend in May 2012, during an event at the Cannes Film Festival, after suspecting her of flirting with another man.

The alleged assault has drawn criticism from Harris’s detractors, who quickly recalled her long-standing public stance on believing survivors of sexual violence. According to anonymous sources, the woman stated that Emhoff struck her in the face with such force that she “spun around.”

Critics on social media wasted no time in highlighting Harris’s past remarks, including her vocal support for survivors during the contentious 2018 confirmation hearings of now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Harris had previously asserted her belief in Christine Blasey Ford, who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault and condemned perceived complacency regarding allegations of sexual abuse.

In a series of posts, Harris has expressed solidarity with survivors, including a statement in September 2018 where she declared, “We won’t let them be silenced or ignored. #BelieveSurvivors.” This sentiment was quickly revisited online, with users remarking that her support for victims now appeared contradictory in light of the allegations against her husband.

The vice president has also been linked to the #MeToo movement, advocating for the rights of women facing abuse and violence. In January 2018, she expressed her commitment to ending abuse, stating, “I stand with women across every industry to say #TIMESUP on abuse, harassment, marginalisation, and underrepresentation.”

In response to the resurfacing allegations against Emhoff, social media users have asked Harris to address the situation publicly. Comments ranged from urging her to “talk to your woman-beater husband” to highlighting the inconsistency in her prior declarations that all women should be believed.

While Harris has built her political career around advocating for the health and safety of women, the recent allegations have prompted her critics to demand accountability and condemnation of Emhoff’s actions. Notably, Harris has previously faced scrutiny for her handling of allegations against former presidential rival Joe Biden when Tara Reade accused him of sexual assault. This situation further complicates her public narrative.

As the situation unfolds, the Harris campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the allegations against Emhoff or the implications for her advocacy work.
