Boxer Anthony Joshua has publicly apologised for being caught driving at 44 mph in a 30 mph zone. He attributes his speeding to the extreme demands of his training regimen.
The 34-year-old heavyweight was stopped by a Sussex Police officer while driving his Range Rover Vogue.
In a letter submitted to the court, Joshua expressed his understanding of the importance of road safety and the repercussions of speeding.
He stated, “I recognise that such circumstances do not justify speeding, and I deeply regret allowing myself to make this error.”
Joshua’s apology comes on the heels of his recent defeat by Daniel Dubois in front of 96,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.
Despite the loss, the athlete is determined to make a comeback and has dismissed any retirement speculation. “I will bounce back from my loss,” he affirmed, emphasising his commitment to returning to the ring.
During his court appearance, Joshua explained that he was travelling to or from a training session when the incident occurred.
He noted that his “extremely demanding” training schedule contributed to a lapse in concentration. “The physical and mental fatigue from my training may have clouded my judgment,” he told the court.
As a consequence of the speeding offence, Joshua was fined £1,176, which includes a £769 fine, £90 in costs, and a £308 victim surcharge. He also received four points on his driving license but was not banned from driving.
In additional court documents, Joshua requested that the court consider the potential impact of extra penalty points, which could lead to a driving ban on his professional career. He emphasised, “As an athlete, I rely heavily on my ability to drive to and from training sessions, often at locations that are difficult to reach.”
