Two people have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Marc Webley, a gangster who was shot dead outside his local pub in Edinburgh. Webley was one of two men who were gunned down outside the Anchor Inn in Granton shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve.
The 38-year-old had shared a series of videos taunting his rivals and daring them to come and get him before he was killed. Mr Webley died of his injuries in hospital, and another man, aged 39, was left in a serious but stable condition.
Charged suspects
A 32-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman have been charged with the incident. They were both arrested by armed police at a flat in Gorgie Road and are due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, January 8. However, police have not confirmed the alleged offences.
Shooting incident
According to officers, people in a red Hyundai Tucson pulled up outside the pub in West Granton Road before launching an ‘isolated, targeted attack’. The driver is thought to have gotten out of the car and fired gunshots before getting back in and fleeing towards Leith. Police forensic investigators examined the scene after the fatal shooting, and floral tributes were also left outside the pub.
Marc Webley’s criminal history
Marc Webley had a history of being involved in gangland violence and was sentenced to 11 years in prison for attempted murder in 2005. Aged 19 at the time, he and another man named James Tant shot a rival thug in Granton in what was described as a failed gangland hit. He was later jailed for six months for trying to intimidate a man into giving him £1,000 at a garage. In 2022, he was also cleared of a double murder bid because a witness claimed she could not identify him.
Relationship with Jane Park
Marc Webley had been in a relationship with Jane Park, Britain’s youngest-ever Euromillions winner, and she is thought to have only ended things with him three weeks before he was shot dead. She expressed her grief on Instagram, saying she was devastated and that she would never forget him.
A report on the two people charged over Mr Webley’s alleged killing will be made to the Procurator Fiscal.
