Vice President Kamala Harris reached out to former President Donald Trump on Tuesday to express her relief that he is safe following a second assassination attempt against him.
The White House confirmed that Harris called Trump to directly convey her gratitude for his safety, describing the conversation as “cordial and brief.”
During a subsequent appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) event in Philadelphia, Harris recounted the call, stating, “I checked on him to see if he was OK. And I told him what I’ve said publicly – there is no place for political violence in our country.
I’m in this election, this race, for many reasons, including to fight for our democracy.” She underscored that while healthy debates and disagreements are crucial, political violence has no place in a democracy.
The call between Harris and Trump came a week after they participated in their first and, likely, only presidential debate ahead of the November election.
In addition to Harris, President Joe Biden also reached out to Trump on Monday to express his relief that Trump is safe, according to a White House official.
The outreach by both Harris and Biden highlights the ongoing concern for Trump’s safety and the broader implications of political violence in the current election cycle.
