The body of an Irish man who went missing while hiking on the Italian island of Sardinia has been discovered, according to local media reports.
The 39-year-old had been the subject of an intensive search after failing to return from a hike on the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, a trail between Masua and Cala Domestica, on Friday.
Italian broadcaster RAI and other media outlets reported that the man’s body was located on the side of Canale de Sa Rocca Niedda by a search dog.
He had been on holiday with his family and was hiking with his brothers when they split up, with the man continuing the hike alone.
The alarm was raised by a family member, and search efforts involving Alpine Rescue personnel, search dogs, a rescue helicopter, and drones with thermal imaging technology continued through Friday and Saturday night.
Local newspaper L’Union Sarda reported that a helicopter was used to recover the body due to its remote location.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland confirmed it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance to the man’s family.
