Sicily, Italy – Four of the seven people who perished when a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month died from suffocation in an air bubble, according to Italian media.

Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, along with Chris and Neda Morvillo, suffocated after oxygen ran out in their cabin on the superyacht Bayesian.

Autopsies revealed that these victims had no water in their lungs, indicating they were asphyxiated by carbon dioxide buildup as the air pockets in their cabin became depleted. Their bodies were discovered on the left side of their cabins, even though the yacht had tilted to the right after sinking, suggesting they moved in an attempt to find the remaining air.

In addition to the Bloomer and Morvillo families, Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, also died in the incident.

Fifteen survivors, including Mike Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, Charlotte Golunski, and her one-year-old daughter Sofia, were rescued. The crew of the Bayesian reported they did their best to save those they could, navigating the tilted ship under challenging conditions.

Italian prosecutors are investigating the boat’s captain, New Zealander James Cutfield, and two Britons, engineer Tim Parker Eaton and crew member Matthew Griffiths, for suspected manslaughter and culpable shipwreck. The three men have been allowed to leave Sicily while the investigation continues.

Authorities and experts are working to understand the sequence of events between the storm hitting the Bayesian at 3:50 a.m. and the ship sinking in just 60 seconds by 4:06 a.m. on August 19.
