A man in his 20s, accused of raping a woman at student accommodation in Dublin, has been granted bail while awaiting the preparation of a book of evidence.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Dublin District Court today following the decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to charge him with the alleged offence, which took place last year.
Judge William Aylmer confirmed that strict reporting restrictions are in place to protect the identities of both the accused and the complainant.
The defendant did not speak during the hearing, but the arresting garda informed the court that the man had denied the allegation upon being charged.
The DPP has directed that the case will proceed to trial on indictment at the Central Criminal Court. Judge Aylmer noted that the accused does not reside at the location where the incident allegedly occurred.
As part of the bail conditions, the man must adhere to several requirements: he must inform the gardaí of any change of address, remain reachable by mobile phone, provide seven days’ notice before any travel outside the State, and avoid contact with the alleged victim or any witnesses.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for September, during which the prosecution’s book of evidence will be presented, and a return for trial order will be granted.
No further evidence regarding the allegation was required at this stage in the proceedings.
