Over 200 Republicans who previously worked for former Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush, the late Senator John McCain, and Senator Mitt Romney have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election.

The open letter, released Monday and published by USA Today, supports Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and appeals to moderate Republicans and conservative independents to back Harris.

A letter recalls the group’s prior efforts to rally voters against former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election. It states, “Four years ago, President George W. Bush, the late Sen. John McCain, and then-Gov. Mitt Romney alumni came together to warn fellow Republicans that re-electing President Trump would be a disaster for our nation.” The signatories, including new alums from George H.W. Bush’s presidency, reaffirmed their previous warnings and now endorse Harris and Walz, acknowledging their ideological differences while criticising the alternatives.

The group argues that another term under Trump would be detrimental, describing his leadership as “chaotic” and criticising his alignment with figures like Russian President Vladimir Putin while allegedly neglecting U.S. allies. They suggest that capturing or killing Yahya Sinwar, a key Hamas leader, would significantly impact the ongoing conflict and potentially shift Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance.

The endorsement follows a similar statement from a dozen Republican White House lawyers who served under Ronald Reagan and both Bush administrations. These lawyers also voiced concerns about Trump’s potential return to power and its risks to democracy and the rule of law.

The letter, which includes nearly 240 signatures, urges voters to choose leaders who promote unity and consensus over division and chaos.

It emphasises the crucial role of moderate Republicans and conservative independents in swinging the presidency to Joe Biden and calls on these voters to retake a decisive stand.

In response to the endorsement, Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung dismissed the letter, stating, “It’s hilarious because nobody knows who these people are. They would rather see the country burn down than see President Trump successfully return to the White House to Make America Great Again.”
