Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin suffered a broken right upper arm in a fall at his office in the Federal Palace East earlier this afternoon.
Parmelin, who leads the Department of Economic Affairs, Education, and Research (EAER), was immediately transported by ambulance to Inselspital for treatment.
Following an examination, Parmelin underwent surgery. The medical team expects him to remain hospitalized for a few days. Despite the injury, Parmelin will continue to perform his duties as much as possible from his hospital bed.
The Federal Council has been notified of the incident. In Parmelin’s absence, Federal Councillor Beat Jans will serve as his deputy.
